Everyday living
Washi used to be an important part of Japanese people’s daily lives.
Shoji to allow a subtle amount of natural light in the room. Wrapping kimono to avoid humidity.
Everyday living now looks very different.
We no longer rely on natural light, or wear kimonos daily.
As everyday life changes, traditions change too.
We evolve and transform washi to fit the everyday living of yours.
02
JAPANESE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Although most washi uses machines in the process nowadays,
the making of washi requires knowledge and craftsmanship.
Washi can come in a variety of colours, thickness, durability, lightness,
and each requires different skills and steps.
We work closely with washi craftsmen from all over Japan to tailor each experience.
What makes us different
COLLABORATIVE DESIGN
yōrai is open to any possibilities washi holds.
We work with a variety of talented designers and creators
from all over the world who help us redefine washi.
WASHI COMMUNITY
OUE washi opened its business in Shitennouji, Osaka in 1948.
Since then, OUE washi has worked with washi craftsmen from all over
Japan with different specialities and formed a community.
